REAL HELP: FIBROMYALGIA.

At The Pain Relief Center, board-certified anesthesiologist Ajay Aggarwal, MD, treats many fibromyalgia patients. He has successfully reduced pain and symptoms and improved overall condition in more than 50% of his patients. Perhaps he can help you, too.

Fibromyalgia syndrome is an arthritis-like condition characterized by neuromuscular pain and fatigue. The word fibromyalgia means pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendons. According to the latest statistics, about 6 million Americans have fibromyalgia, most of them females between 35 and 65. It is often referred to as a syndrome because it is a group of signs and symptoms that occur together.

Fibromyalgia was first named as a legitimate condition or syndrome by the American College of Rheumatology in 1990. At that time, they presented their two main criteria for diagnosing it; history of pain (on both sides of the body, above and below the waist) for at least three months and pain in at least 11 of 18 tender-point sites lined up symmetrically along the body.

The condition has been surrounded by controversy for years, however, because those diagnosed have perfectly normal blood tests. In addition, their symptoms are often the same symptoms present with lupus, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and certain immune dysfunction diseases.

The cause or causes of fibromyalgia are still unknown despite years of intensive research. Current treatment options for fibromyalgia include:

• Medications to diminish pain & improve sleep
• Exercise programs that stretch muscles & improve aerobic fitness
• Relaxation techniques to ease muscle tension & anxiety
• Educational programs to help you understand & manage fibromyalgia
• Massage therapy techniques
